In our home we practice the use of positive affirmations or what the elders of my youth referred to as “speaking life.” I speak words of encouragement and praise into the lives of my daughters constantly. We talk about their dreams and I remind them that they are within reach, worthy of dreaming and working to make a reality. We talk about the goals they’ve accomplished and the dreams they’ve already been able to grab hold of. Practice is key here because I’m teaching them to do this for themselves; sometimes it’s walking them through positive affirmations leading them, helping them to say it aloud again and again in hopes that it will become ingrained in their hearts.
My husband and I both want to raise daughters who know their worth. We see it but it is more important that they see it. We speak it but it’s imperative that they speak it.
Little Miss is Destined for Greatness plants a seed of belief in one’s self. It is a book that lets children know they can be proud of who they are and have big hopes and dreams for who they want to become. It draws a connection between the qualities that make them great humans and how each of those qualities will serve them on their path to greatness. It will remind them that they are already great while giving them something to strive for.
The sweet illustrations coupled with rhymes will capture the hearts of readers. At the end children are invited to write their names on a page as a reminder that they too are destined for greatness.
This book reiterates the value of learning to encourage and affirm ourselves. While it’s important to have people in your life that cheer you on there will be moments when your biggest cheerleader will be you. Amber shared that her book is meant to “serve as a mirror” for black children, ensuring that they are represented and empowered. It ended up being a mirror for my daughter and me. Thank you, Amber, for gifting us your book.
