I bought this book before the holidays and tucked it away until Sunday night. I was waiting for the right time for us to read it. It was the perfect bedtime story to read on the eve of my 6 year old’s return to school and 1st day at her new school. Not to mention, she loves mermaids! She laughed and giggled as we read through this story about a mermaid’s first day of school. She especially loved A-B-Seas and seeing the mermaids enjoying story time with their teacher — a fantasy story about boys and girls with no tail and couldn’t breathe under water... at the end of the book we sang the goodbye song and went over the Mermaid School Handbook — my favorite part was the section on new students “If you meet a new mermaid swimming by, ask her name and tell her yours. It’s a great way to make friends.”
We spent some time talking about her worries and our hopes for this new chapter. It was wonderful to begin it by reading a magical tale of a mermaid who arrives at a new school, void of familiar faces but nevertheless, hopeful that she can make new friends — something that was my daughter’s biggest worry.
The right book, the one that you need to read, hear, or share can do wonders for the heart. And for my daughter, and for me, wanting nothing more than to comfort her, *this* was the right book. One both whimsical and relatable and of course, filled with mermaids.
